Psoriasis can present in different ways in different people. It is characterised by red, scaly patches of skin that we call plaques. Being inflammatory and auto-immune in nature means it is also linked to arthritis in the joints, digestive issues, coeliac disease, lupus and poor nail health.
Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease. Many individuals have benefited from following an anti-inflammatory diet to help reduce their symptoms.
Foods to avoid because they have been shown to cause or increase inflammation:
- Fatty red meats
- Dairy products
- Processed foods (basically anything with white refined flour – cakes, pastries, biscuits, pasta, crisps..)
- Refined sugars
- Nightshade vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes and peppers
Foods to include in your diet that have been shown to reduce inflammation:
- Cold-water, oily fish. Go for smaller fish for reduced exposure to heavy metals. Try mackerel, sardines, salmon, herring.
- Flaxseeds, olive oil, pumpkin seeds and walnuts. These are plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Colorful fresh fruits and vegetables. Choose foods from the colors of the rainbow.
Nutritious examples are:
- Squash and sweet potatoes
- Kale and broccoli
A note on the “Modern Western Diet”
You've probably heard the praises for the Mediterranean style diet. One of the reasons our modern western diet is out of whack and causing chronic health issues is because of the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3.
Basically Omega-6 foods can be inflammatory and Omega-3 foods can be anti-inflammatory.
We want to aim for more Omega-3 rich foods for ongoing health and to tackle inflammatory disorders such as psoriasis. This means reducing grain and red meat intake and increasing oily fish, olive oil, seeds and vegetables.
Following a Mediterranean style diet means a good omega 6/3 ratio.
How can a Naturopath help?
I can help to tailor diet plans specifically for you and monitor your progress. Its always good to have someone to keep you on track, particularly when dietary changes are needed. Its not always easy!
I can also assess the root cause of your psoriasis or inflammatory disease. Perhaps there are underlying food intolerances, blood sugar regulation issues, hormonal upsets or stress that is fueling your psoriasis? We can test for all of these things and get answers.
Herbal medicines and nutritional medicine can then be prescribed for you. While skin disorders rarely resolve within weeks, I have seen incredible results within months.
